Holistic health recognises that disease occurs in the person as a result of discord in the mind, body, spirit and soul aspects. Harmony between these results in vibrant health.

The world health organisation has come up with a holistic definition of health: Health is more than simply the absence of illness. It is the active state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being.

A person does not live in isolation. We interact with our environments. These environments can have a great impact on the harmonious relationship between the mind, body and spirit. This is the root cause of most diseases which we claim to have unknown causes. In holistic medicine each individual and his sickness are considered to be unique. The state of disease is the consequence of his own interaction with his own environment. Therefore they need a specific tailored holistic healing program in response to his unique case. The environment of the person, community, family and culture must be taken into consideration. All these interact with the individual and may be contributors to the state of discord in the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects. Therefore since there are many disciplines of healing, we respect each one to bring in it’s strenghts to help the patient. Psychotherapists, nutritionists, herbalists, acupuncturists, reflexologists, spiritual healers etc. all have their own unique added value in the healing of the person even conventional medicine. The whole we say is greater than it’s individual parts. The mind needs its own nutrition, the spirit too, the soul and the body too. We find that each discipline of healing may not touch on all these effectively. A nutritionist may help with nutritional healing of the body. Conventional therapies may help mask the disturbing symptoms speedily. The specialist in mental issues will help calm the untamed mind. The spiritualist may help the soul etc. Therefore a more holistic approach encourages the client to benefit holistically.
