Foods Rich in Antioxidants

An antioxidant is a substance that helps prevent oxidation. During the process of oxidation a number of unstable atoms are produced in the body. These are reffered to as free radicals. These free radicals may attack and destroy healthy body cells. We say that they cause a state referred to as oxidative stress within the body. This state of oxidative stress in the body creates a conducive atmosphere for the growth of bacteria, viruses, fungi etc. the proliferation of chronic disorders e.g cancer, AIDS, heart disease etc. During oxidative stress inflammation also occurs hence inflammatory diseases may be promoted e.g allergies, arthritis etc. Our current western lifestyle and diet promotes the creation of free radicals in the body hence a suppressed immune system and inflammatory syndrome. Processed foods and environmental stresses exposure may lead to a high incidence of occurrence of the state of oxidative stress in the population. A host of corresponding diseases will also be observed.

Nature has provided a natural solution to this common problem. Organic foods contain a rich antioxidant bank. However inorder for us to benefit most from these antioxidants , we need not process these food sources. Once they undergo any processing the quantity and quality of the antioxidants drop. The foods main purpose may now be simply to fill your stomach but not benefit from.the full natural antioxidant content. This is why communities that consume processed foods most of the times are getting sicker and sicker all the time. They have to survive on processed diet plus pills and supplemental tablets. These synthetic supplements attempt to fill the void created by the processing process. However, the question arises as to the feasibility of them filling the void 100% and also on the added high costs of supplementation to survive. It would be better and cheaper to eat the original product from nature unprocessed. It would be nutritious and vibrant health promoting.
